Chemical formula — - Ba(OH)2. Barium hydroxide under standard conditions represents colourless crystals. Saturated solution of barium hydroxide is called barytic water. It is hygroscopic. It is not soluble in alcohol, but is soluble in water.
Forms crystalline hydrates with one, two, seven and eight molecules of water. Barium hydroxide is toxic, maximum concentration limit makes 0,5 mg/m ³-. Apply barium hydroxide as reactant on (SO4)2−-and (CO3) 2−-(sulfate - and carbonate ions), to purification of rastititelny oils and animal fats as component of greasings, for removal (SO4)2−-(sulfate ions) of industrial solutions, receiving salts of barium, and also rubidium hydroxides and caesium from their sulfates and carbonates.
In sugar industry it is applied to release of sugar from molasses.
